Chapter Fourteen
âI still donât understand why Iâm the one negotiating with a Nix,â Lina grumbled, taking the lyre from Pigeonâs hand. It had been the only instrument they could find, finally, after searching for two hours. It was in a closet in the house next to the one theyâd entered, in a case that had preserved its strings.
Willa had oiled them carefully, then cleaned the dust from the instrument. âThis should do,â sheâd said with an optimistic smile. âJust be sure that our passage to the capital includes the necklaces, or weâll drown.â
The ânecklacesâ sheâd mentioned were apparently the way non-water-dwellers were able to survive under the waves. Braken hadnât been pleased to learn theyâd be going underwater. âYou mean weâre not traveling by boat?â His eyes had narrowed, his face red, and Lina knew his temper would be making an appearance soon.
The argument behind them, theyâd made it over the wall with only a couple hours of light left before nightfall. Theyâd joined the road a half-mile from the city, and their disguises had managed to keep anyone from recognizing them until they left the road again a few miles later. Willa had led them down the banks to a river that flowed under a wooden bridge built to continue the road.
The four of them were under the bridge now, going over the instructions for negotiating with a Nix. âTheyâre harmless, but that doesnât mean they wonât try to get the upper hand in a deal,â Willa warned. âDonât let them distract you. We want safe passage with an arrival before the full moon.â
âYou should be doing this,â Lina said, trying to shove the lyre into Willaâs hands, but the wildling stepped back and deflected the instrument.
âYouâre the strongest,â Willa countered. âAnd Nix can sense Fae magical strength. They would consider it a sign of disrespect if any of us approached in your stead.â
âFine,â Lina sighed. At this point in her newly remembered life, she was used to tossing herself into situations with which she had no experience. âLetâs get this over with already.â She didnât like the idea of being caught out here in the middle of the night.
She stepped forward, careful of the mud along the riverbank. Tromping through the weeds, she looked back over her shoulder to see her friends ducking beneath the bridge. Willa shot her a thumbs-up, and Lina grumbled a curse under her breath.
Reaching a flat rock that was large enough to stand on comfortably, she stopped, going over the words Willa had taught her in her mind. She strummed the strings of the instrument once, then spoke them. âEarth and Water, intertwined. Shelter and sheltered. Given and giving. The land cups the water, and the tree bends to drink.â
She made little sense of the words, and after sheâd spoken them, Lina wondered if theyâd have any effect. For long moments, nothing happened, and then she saw a small rippling as tiny bubbles rose to the surface. The rippling increased, and the top of a head covered in bright red hair appeared.
